Where there are illustrations, the picture is the background image of the box and a transparent GIF, with the type on it, is in the foreground.
As the type is not within the JPEG background image, it can be saved at a much smaller filesize.
Using a more highly compressed JPEG and a GIF with a low bit-depth, gives the optimal image quality for the lowest bytecount.
